The Magic of Play: It’s Where Children Learn to Dream
Do we sometimes feel that play is simply a waste of time?
That children should be doing something more “useful,” like studying?
What we often fail to realize is that play is a child’s way of studying the world. Every child is born a dreamer, and play is how they explore, imagine, and learn about life.
I remember, as a child, my favorite form of play was imagination. I would sit quietly and imagine anything I wanted to be, and then act it out. I dare say that it gave me a sense of confidence, believing that I could be anything I wanted to be.
Come to think about it, I’m still a dreamer. I imagine, I believe I can, and I go for it! That simple act of imagining as a child boosted my confidence as an adult, and I still completely believe that I can be anything I want to be. Age is truly just a number when it comes to the magic of imagination and creativity.
Likewise, when we give our children room to play—safely—we give them the opportunity to dream, to dare, and to believe that they can be anything they wish to be.
I remember being told by my older sister that our dad was a dreamer. Unfortunately, I never got to hear the wonders of his childhood tales and how they shaped him as an adult and a father. But when I hear these stories, I burst out laughing and can’t help but wonder if that’s where I got my imaginative mind from! Well, at least I hope so.
Children are formed by what they think, what they hear, and what they see. Allow your children to see what only they can see, and to play it out. You’d be pleasantly surprised at the outcomes.
Confidence is brewing. Dreams are forming. A light is beginning to shine. Let’s not be the ones to turn it off, let’s let children dream, imagine, and play freely!
